The Boston Red Sox have some important decisions to make ahead of the trade deadline. After they traded away superstar Rafael Devers, many speculate they’ll continue to sell in the coming weeks.

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden recently ran a poll of MLB executives in order to gain a better understanding of what is likely to happen ahead of the trade deadline. These executives seemed to predict that the Red Sox would look to trade star outfielder Jarren Duran in a potential blockbuster deal.

“I was surprised by how many front office executives mentioned Duran. It makes me think the Red Sox may have decided Wilyer Abreu will play right field and Roman Anthony will play left going forward,” Bowden wrote. “Duran, 28, is under team control through 2028. Last year, he led the majors in doubles (48) and triples (14) and had 21 homers, 75 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases. This year, he is slashing .253/.313/.410 with 20 doubles and a league-leading nine triples. He has been linked with the Padres and Phillies in trade talks.”

The Red Sox have a plethora of talented outfielders on their roster and in the farm system. Trading Duran now would be selling high on a valuable asset, and it would likely net them a huge return.

The Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres were mentioned by Bowden as potential landing spots, and they both make sense.

The Phillies have needed outfield help for quite some time now. They could look to headline a deal with a prospect like outfielder Justin Crawford in order to build the package it would take to land Duran.

The Padres don’t have as much prospect capital to trade from, but they desperately need to add more talent to the outfield. Their left field slot has been one of the biggest roster voids in the league this season.
